Richard Mathews

Richard Mathews is an attorney focused on ministry nonprofit corporations and employment law in Texas. He is Director of Safe Environment for the Diocese of Fort Worth and previously served as general counsel to Trail Life USA and to the Boy Scouts of America.

Richard is a member of the Michigan and Texas Bar Associations and is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the Federal Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Sixth Circuits. In addition, he is a member of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

The New Evangelism

Richard serves on the Board of Directors of Human Life International, the world's largest international pro-life education and advocacy organization. He is chairman of the Board of Directors of HLI Endowment, Inc.

He served for three years as the initial general counsel for Trail Life USA, a national outdoor youth adventure program with an emphasis on fidelity to Christian teaching, character and faith formation, leadership development, and greater understanding of authentic manhood.

Richard is also a member of the St. Thomas More Society, the Cardinal Newman Society, the Christian Leadership Alliance, and the Knights of Columbus.


Richard earned his law degree at the Drake University School of Law in 1983. He also earned a Master of Laws degree in Employment and Labor Law from Wayne State University in 1993. He received his undergraduate degree in political science and philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1979.


Richard and his wife, Laura, are active in parish life at St. Maria Goretti parish in Arlington, Texas. They have been married for over 35 years and have raised two children.
